O.K., I'm way out of my element here but I promised a post on diet, so here goes. I know little on this subject. I am not a calorie counter and really never "diet." I just know what I've observed about myself, and through watching others.

I think most women have different metabolisms than most men and things vary from individual to individual. Look around your own family; even the people you share DNA with react differently to different diets and foods. You've got to find what makes sense for you.

As stated earlier, stay away from "bad" sugar; processed sugar, candy, soda, packaged cookies and cakes... Regardless of the high calories, when I eat this stuff I'm hungry more often and I crave more high calorie foods. When I don't eat this stuff I feel better and more energetic.

Don't eat 4 hours before bedtime. This one is very important for me. My wife seems to be able to snack at night and not gain weight but when I want to lose weight this is the first rule I implement. Drink water, but don't eat. If you are an avid, late night snacker and you find yourself starving try this find a large, low calorie food item you can eat to make yourself feel full. Pickles and raw potatoes work for me. I like both, they are low calorie and filling.

As Blackhawk pointed out; eat breakfast. I usually eat a bowl of oatmeal. Well, I could give a lot of specifics about me, but that doesn't necessarily correlate to you, so the main thing is stay away from sweets (we don't need more diabetics in this country) and experiment with different stuff until you find what works. I also like Harry's suggestion of setting aside one day a week when you don't pay any attention to what you eat. I typically do that also, even when trying to lose weight.

Oh yeah, when you're in a restaurant try eating half a meal. Mrs. Firefly and I almost always split an entree when we go out and it's always enough. American restaurants serve huge portions. We typically split an entree and get one extra salad or side dish and it is plenty. Also, when out with our kids I sometimes won't order a meal because they will leave enough uneaten food to feed a grown man. Restaurants give kids too much food too, but kids are smart enough not to eat it all. So, save yourself some money and calories the next time you take your family out to eat.

Alright Harriers (Harryacks? Harricanes?), if you aren't convinced I'm nuts yet this post will leave no doubt. There's been an odd convergence of coincidences in my life this past week that have all pointed to this one, very bizarre idea. The first few times the fates pointed me towards it I was convinced I was nuts, and didn't mention anything, but more coincidences continued to pop up. Today Glenn(?) over at Dirty Harry's Place.com danced around the same subject and I figure somebody wants me to put this into writing, so, here goes...

In mid-September, 2001 I read this document. I figured if some guy named Osama bin Laden wanted to kill me and my family I ought to at least understand what he's on about. Three main things hit me as I read it; 1. I was surprised how difficult it was to understand due to cultural differences. It's a very "foreign" narrative style and flows awkwardly to a western reader. 2. I was surprised at how explicit and honest Osama is in the document. Like "Mein Kampf" there is no nuance. No obfuscation. He states cleary and directly what he wants and what he will do if his demands are not met. This is not a document written by John Kerry. 3. There is no "second place" in his war. It's him or us/Weak horse, strong horse.

I find it nearly impossible to believe Barack Obama or Susan Rice have ever read Osama's declaration of war against America. You would think a guy who wants to be Commander in Chief of our armed forces would have bothered, but it doesn't look like he's found the time. I hope he does before January 20, 2009.

I'm trying to keep up with both sites' posts and comments and hold down my job as an evil capitalist/industrialist. I feel like a 3 legged cat in a linoleum litter box and I also sense some confusion in the comments from you, our dear readers.

Here's what I know; Harry has not told me specifics about his relationship with the folks at "Liber," "Libe," "The site that shall not be named," but he did give me a very polite heads up about the need for this change and a request to post here as the dust settles. I have not had many personal interactions with the man, we've never met, but he has always been gracious and generous to me. I greatly enjoy his writing; he makes me think and laugh. I know no more of his personal life than what he has shared with all of us.

I feel confident Harry will continue to share his thoughts with us and provide a forum(s) where we can discuss the news of the day with each other. None of us yet knows the details, but life obviously threw the guy a curveball yesterday and I say we cut the guy some slack as he finds his way back to the batter's box. His writing has entertained me more in the last two years than any $10 Hollywood movie and he's never asked for anything in return. I sense the guy can use some friends right now. Go to DH's place and let him know you're with him; "Did we give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?"
